Watkins Glen State Park – Beauty and Thrill together

Watkins Glen State Park is a premier natural landmark in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The park features a dramatic 400 feet deep gorge, 19 waterfalls, and over 800 stone steps along its famous 1.5 mile Gorge trail.

We were travelling to Niagara Falls from New York, and eager to see the spectacular show of the great waterfall. But god has some bonus to offer us apart from the Niagara.

I was bit upset when our tour guide announced that we will spend some time in the Watkins State Park but when he mentioned about hiking some steps, I was thrilled. It was a great opportunity to experience the hike on an American mountain. And with excitement I jumped out of the bus.

Weather was pleasant, with temperatures around 15 degrees and soft sunshine. Appropriate for the hike.

Our bus had stopped at the first level parking and then we were headed towards the park. Initially it looked like a jungle trail because I saw some plateau and then steep hike. But little further climbing we entered a gorge. It was a mesmerising view. It was a deep, narrow valley with steep, rocky walls, carved by the flowing water stream.

Every stream which falls down, creates a beautiful waterfall. It was wonderful to walk along the waterfalls and with the fall foliage all around us. It was climbing up the stairs as well as climbing down. Overall it was a thrilling experience.

It was beautiful view and thrilling experience to climb down the stairs. The path was circular and looking down or looking up was courageous. Overall I enjoyed the trail fully.

The steps carved in the stone, and the autumn foliage all around us was the trip highlight. We were continuously looking up for further climb but it was endless.

I was simply spellbound to see such a beautiful site. I realised the wise decision of our tour guide and thanked him for choosing such a beautiful place to visit.

About the Park

Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, with a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound. Within two miles, the glen’s stream descends 400 feet past 200 foot cliff, generating 19 waterfalls along its course.

The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. There are full fledged facilities for the campers as well as day visitors and picnickers.

This park was thrice nominated for the best State Park in US and won the third place.

We toured a mile of the gorged trail that follows Glen Creek past water-sculpted rocks, through tunnels, next to and actually under two waterfalls. There are many beautiful stone steps on this trail, making it a bit challenging for some people.
