It is cultural tradition across India, to start any function or event by lighting of the lamp.
Inaugurating an event by lighting a lamp is a traditional symbolic act that represents moving from darkness to light, ignorance to wisdom, and negativity to positivity.
Normally the ceremony goes like this –
The Lamp: A traditional brass oil lamp (often a diya or a multi-tiered kuthu vilakku) filled with oil or ghee and cotton wicks is placed on a decorated stage stand.
The Honored Guests: Chief guests, speakers, or senior leaders are invited to the stage by an anchor or host.
Lighting the Wicks: The dignitaries light the wicks while instrumental music or an invocation prayer plays in the background.
Official Opening: The glowing lamp serves as the formal signal that the event or program has officially begun.
I love this cultural tradition. It is followed across India and believed to be the good begining of any event.
