Happy Halloween to all my readers.
Halloween, celebrated every year on 31 October, has a fascinating history. What appears today to be a fun-filled festival of costumes, pumpkins, trick-or-treating and spooky decorations actually has its roots in ancient Celtic traditions dating back more than 2,000 years.
Its history is a blend of ancient pagan customs, Christian traditions, European folklore and modern American culture.

Halloween traces its origins primarily to an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced Sow-in).
The Celts lived in areas that today include Ireland, Scotland, Wales and parts of Britain and France.
They celebrated Samhain on the night of 31 October, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.
Winter was associated with darkness, cold, hardship and death.
The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living world and the spirit world became thin, allowing spirits of the dead to return to earth.
People lit large bonfires, wore masks and costumes, and performed rituals to protect themselves from wandering spirits.
Interestingly, some historians believe costumes were worn to disguise people from potentially harmful spirits.

Today, Halloween is one of the most widely celebrated cultural festivals in the United States.
Although its origins were connected with harvest, death and the spirit world, modern Halloween is largely a secular celebration.
Its popular traditions include:
Costumes: Dressing up as ghosts, witches, superheroes, historical figures and fictional characters.
Pumpkins: Decorating homes with carved and illuminated pumpkins.
Trick-or-treating: Children collecting sweets from neighbours.
Haunted houses: Creating scary experiences for entertainment.
Halloween parties: Celebrating with friends, families and communities.
Interestingly, Halloween has also become an occasion for creativity, photography and community bonding.
