Yes, I set focus areas

Do you set personal goals for yourself?

Goals setting is an annual ritual in corporate life but post retirement I kept away from such words.

But I set yearly focus area on my birthday. It is a focus area for me for that year like focusing on health or focusing on learning a music instrument etc.

This practice I followed till my retirement. Every birthday, I used to decide the focus area for me and follow the same sincerely.

You may wonder, what is the difference between Goal and a Focus area. Let me explain, Goal is always measurable and set as a number. For example if I set my goal as weight reduction, the goal could be reducing 8 kgs in a year. You measure the progress against the goal and get stressed out.

And the focus area is a broad topic to look into. There is no definitive number as a target so no worries of achieving results.

But your sincerity and consistency matters the most.

In my opinion, the Goal brings stress and pressure to achieve, whereas the focus area is broad and can be easily achieved with enjoyable efforts. I

Let’s understand this with an example. I have decided that my focus area would be health. So I can focus on the foods I eat and workout like walking or weightlifting. But there is no definitive target to achieve.

Since there is no set target, there is no pressure to achieve results. However, it is possible that, in absence of pressure the target achievement could be compromised. But it is okay. If you define to focus a particular topic and you progress towards that, it should be okay.

At least, there is something to look forward to. Your personal life does not remain aimless or empty.
