What’s one thing you know now that would have saved your younger self a lot of pain?

I always trusted people whether known or unknown. Never doubted their intentions. It was my strong belief that, I never cheated on anyone and never lied in any situation, I will never be cheated by anybody.
With this belief, I have blindly trusted people and in return, I was looted by the known friends who never returned my money back. I trusted them with my belief and lend them the required money which was never paid back.
After many such incidents, I learned that you should not trust people without knowing their background. This was a very costly lesson for me.
Even in the job, I have seen people showing the results which they never achieved. I just cannot understand, how they can present such things with so much courage and confidence.
And then I realised that, please take a pause, understand the reality and then respond. Though it was very difficult for me to understand but I have eventually accepted the reality. Now I have reduced giving monetary help to the people. I can’t completely stop, because my heart melts if I see anyone suffering.
However, I never compromised on my ethics and principles. I used to courageously present my failures or the results which were not so good. I never lied to anyone. Sometimes it is wiser to keep quiet than telling the truth which I followed.
As a result I was not very popular figure but known as upfront speaker. This is extremely difficult to follow but I can assure you good night sleep.
I learned this lesson very late and lost lots of money. So my advice to my younger self is that, be careful with people and help only genuinely needy people.
