Waste Management is a huge problem all over the cities. I mean segregation at source and disposal according to the category. In my opinion, if we could improve segregation at the generation point, the waste management can improve and the city will also improve.

India generates over 150,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste every single day, facing a severe waste management crisis driven by rapid urbanization and weak enforcement.

Key Waste Management Challenges

• Lack of Source Segregation: Households frequently fail to separate wet and dry waste, and mixed garbage undermines downstream recycling efforts.
• Overburdened Landfills: India relies heavily on open dumps and massive landfills (like Delhi’s Ghazipur) that exceed capacity, releasing toxic leachate and methane.
• Weak Infrastructure: Many urban local bodies lack proper processing facilities, leading to uncollected garbage and illegal dumping.
• Informal Sector Reliance: Millions of informal waste pickers drive recycling recovery, yet they operate without adequate safety, social security, or formal integration.
• Policy and Enforcement Gaps: While frameworks like the Solid Waste Management Rules exist, enforcement remains weak, and public participation stays low.

The environmental, economic, and social consequences of poor waste management in India are severe. Environmentally, the uncontrolled dumping and burning of waste release harmful pollutants into the air, water, and soil.

Methane emissions from landfills contribute to global warming, while plastic waste in rivers and oceans disrupts aquatic ecosystems.

A study by the NGO estimated that over 1.5 million people in India are engaged in informal waste collection and recycling. These workers face exploitation, health risks, and social stigma, despite their critical role in waste recovery.

Hence, even if we could improve waste segregation at source, that means our houses and shops and restaurants, the city will improve significantly.

Let me share what I practice at home. We use two dustbins at home. We use two different colour dust bins, Green one for wet waste and blue colour for dry waste. Even the housekeeping person collects the waste in two different bags for better disposal.

Electronic and medical waste is given differently whenever it is collected, and there are defind colours for these categories too. These rules are informed to all the society residents and first lot of coloured bags were given them free and then they were supposed buy on their own.

The enforcement of this rule is strict. The waste will not be collected if it is not segregated and disposed in the standard colour bags. Later the resident has to go to the collection van and give him the bag after segregation.

We further plan to install a project for Composting the organic waste generated in our society. The manure so produced will be used for garden in the housing complex and will be distributed to the residents.
