Why Do We Travel? Exploring the Reasons Behind Our Love for Travel

It is a nice question to ponder upon: Why do we travel?

Perhaps we travel to escape our routine, discover new cultures, experience the beauty of nature, meet new people, or even find ourselves.

Pico Iyer famously observed that we initially travel to lose ourselves and then travel to find ourselves. This thought made me curious about my own travel journey. Why do I love to travel so much?

I have travelled for work, photography, family holidays and simply for the joy of exploring a new place. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that travel means something different to each of us.

For me, travel is a combination of curiosity, exploration, nature, people, adventure and a break from routine.

I came up with a few reasons why I love to travel.

Why Do I Travel?

  • To explore new places and cultures
  • To immerse myself in the beauty of nature
  • To meet new people and make new connections
  • To understand different lifestyles and life stories
  • To escape from the monotony of everyday life
  • To experience adventure and excitement
  • To learn something new from every journey

Let me explore each of these reasons.

1. Explore New Places and Cultures

Curiosity to explore new places, people and cultures is one of the biggest reasons behind my love for travel.

Whenever I visit a new destination, I enjoy observing how people live, what they wear, what they eat and how their traditions influence their everyday lives. Every place has its own character, and every culture has something new to teach us.

Travel gives us an opportunity to step outside our familiar surroundings and see the world from a different perspective.

There is always something new to learn when we travel.

Sometimes, it may be a historical monument or an ancient tradition. Sometimes, it may simply be the way a local family prepares its food or celebrates a festival.

Travel expands our world beyond what we already know.

2. Immerse Yourself in the Beauty of Nature

Nature is another major reason why I love travelling.

Whenever I visit a new destination, I naturally look for its natural wonders—waterfalls, mountains, caves, forests, rivers and beautiful landscapes.

Nature has an incredible ability to satisfy our curiosity and fill us with wonder.

India, in particular, is incredibly diverse when it comes to culture, food, languages and natural beauty.

For example, travelling to the Himalayan region offers an entirely different experience. Snow-covered mountains, white-water rivers, tall pine trees, dense forests and chilly weather create an atmosphere that is difficult to describe in words.

Travel to South India and the experience changes completely. You can explore magnificent temples, enjoy delicious local cuisine, visit tea and coffee plantations and photograph beautiful landscapes.

This diversity is one of the reasons why travelling in India can feel like visiting several different countries.

3. Meet New People and Make New Connections

For me, this is perhaps the most important part of travelling.

When we travel, we meet people we have never known before. I particularly enjoy having conversations with strangers because they often open up an entirely new world for us.

Their lifestyle, food habits, beliefs and experiences may be completely different from ours. Sometimes, they may even have views that are opposite to our own.

My philosophy is simple: Embrace people with an open heart and an open mind.

Do not judge them. Do not constantly compare them with yourself. Instead, respect the diversity and try to learn something new.

Every person has a story to tell. Sometimes, all they need is a little trust and a patient listener before they are willing to share it.

Over the years, I have met many such people and listened to their life stories. Some stories have been so fascinating that they could easily be part of a fiction book, while others have been simple and ordinary. But every story has something to teach us.

4. Escape From the Monotony of Everyday Life

Human beings naturally seek change. We can easily get bored with routines.

The same job, the same workplace, the same surroundings and the same daily schedule can sometimes become monotonous and stressful. Travel provides a welcome change.

A change of place, people, food and surroundings can bring fresh energy into our lives. Even a short trip can help us return to our routine with a refreshed mind.

Travel may not solve all our problems, but taking a break from our routine can certainly help us look at those problems with a fresh perspective.

5. Experience Adventure and Thrill

For many people, travel is all about adventure.

Activities such as rock climbing, bungee jumping, trekking, scuba diving, kayaking and white-water rafting provide excitement and challenge.

But to experience these adventures, we have to travel to places where they are possible.

Adventure travel pushes us beyond our comfort zone. It teaches us to overcome fear, accept challenges and experience life differently. And sometimes, the adventure is not an activity at all. It may simply be travelling to a remote destination, walking through an unfamiliar trail or watching a sunrise from a mountain.

A Few Words of Caution Before You Travel

While travelling is exciting, a little preparation can make the experience much better.

Do your homework before visiting an unfamiliar destination. Find out about the place, weather, local customs, transportation, accommodation and important safety considerations before planning your itinerary.

But once you reach your destination, don’t rush. Observe the place calmly before you start clicking photographs or taking selfies. Sometimes we become so busy documenting our travel that we forget to actually experience it.

Try the local cuisine instead of always looking for food from your own region. As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Respect local customs, interact with local people and allow yourself to experience the destination as it truly is.

After all, travel is not just about visiting a place; it is about experiencing it.

So, Why Do We Travel?

Perhaps there is no single answer to the question “Why do we travel?”

We travel for different reasons at different stages of our lives.

We travel to explore.

We travel to experience nature.

We travel to meet people.

We travel to learn.

We travel to escape our routine.

We travel for adventure.

And sometimes, we travel simply because we want to feel alive.

For me, travel has become much more than moving from one destination to another. It is an opportunity to observe, learn, connect with people, experience nature and create memories.

Every journey leaves something behind—a photograph, a story, a friendship, a lesson or simply a beautiful memory.

And perhaps that is the real beauty of travel.

The destination may be temporary, but the experience stays with us forever.

This is my list of favourite travel destinations and the reasons why I love travelling.

What about you?

Why do you travel? And which destinations are on your travel wish list?

Thank you, my dear readers, for stopping by.

Stay Happy & Keep Smiling and keep exploring!

  1. There’s something profound in how you distinguish between visiting and experiencing. Pico Iyer’s observation that we travel to lose ourselves then find ourselves, is the arc of this whole essay. And you’re right: destinations are temporary, but the lessons, connections, friendships, and photographs of landscapes and people those stay forever. The real beauty of travel isn’t checking boxes. It’s the stranger who tells you their life story, the waterfall that makes you feel small and part of something vast, the moment you realize ‘this breath I’m taking right now, in this place, will never come again.’ Travel as presence. Travel as vulnerability. Travel as becoming.

      1. You captured it so beautifully, that lingering, the way travel sits with us. It’s not just the places we see but who we become in them. Thank you for creating space for that kind of experience.
