Health Is Wealth: Why Fitness Should Be a Lifelong Priority
I remember the famous saying, “Health is Wealth,” which we were taught during our childhood. At that time, the deeper meaning behind this proverb was not very clear to me. Today, however, I understand it completely.
Most of us keep our primary focus on our career, financial growth, and creating wealth. During the important years when we are building our health and fitness, we often ignore them. Later in life, when we finally realize the importance of good health, it may already be too late to reverse the damage.
That is why I believe health and fitness should be a priority from an early age, rather than something we start thinking about only when health problems appear.
Make Sports a Part of Your Lifestyle
One of our favourite pastimes should be playing a sport or outdoor game simply for enjoyment.
I strongly believe that if the habit of playing sports is developed during childhood, it can remain a part of our lives for many years. You don’t necessarily have to become a professional athlete or win competitions. The real objective is to enjoy the activity while keeping your body active and your mind healthy.
Sports can become one of the simplest ways to incorporate regular exercise into our daily routine.
Exercise Should Be Enjoyable
Any activity we perform regularly should ideally provide us with enough physical exercise. This is because forced exercise can quickly become boring and is difficult to sustain in the long run.
To build a healthy habit, we need to develop a natural attraction towards that activity. And that attraction comes when the activity gives us pleasure, satisfaction, and joy.
Instead of telling ourselves, “I have to exercise,” it is much better to find an activity that makes us say, “I want to do this.”
That small change in mindset can make fitness a lifelong habit.
Why Outdoor Sports Are a Great Choice
In my opinion, one of the best choices is to take up an outdoor sport as a hobby.
Sports offer a double benefit. They provide physical exercise while also helping us develop a strong and resilient mind. Every sport teaches us something about life. We experience success, failure, competition, patience, discipline, and perseverance.
Most importantly, sports teach us how to accept failure and come back stronger.
These lessons are useful not only on the playing field but also in our personal and professional lives.
My Own Approach to Health and Fitness
I have tried to apply these principles in my own life.
My day usually starts with either cycling or a gym workout and ends at the Table Tennis Club. I am neither a long-distance cycling enthusiast nor a table tennis champion. But that is not the objective.
I simply enjoy both activities, and they have naturally become part of my daily fitness routine.
I also follow the habit of taking a post-dinner walk with my wife. It is a short and simple walk, but it serves two purposes. It gives us some physical activity after dinner and, more importantly, provides us with valuable time together. A simple walk can therefore contribute not only to our physical well-being but also to a stronger relationship.
Wildlife Photography and Fitness
My passion for wildlife photography also contributes to my fitness journey.
Wildlife and bird photography is much more than standing at one place and pressing the shutter button. It often involves walking long distances, carrying heavy photographic equipment, waiting patiently, and spending hours in nature.
During bird photography trips, it is not unusual for us to walk more than 10 miles in search of different bird species.
The wonderful thing is that I never think of these long walks as exercise. I am simply pursuing something I love. The physical activity becomes a natural by-product of my passion.
And perhaps that is the best form of exercise—exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise.
Health Should Come Before Wealth
We spend a significant part of our lives building our careers, earning money, buying homes, creating investments, and accumulating wealth.
But none of that can give us true happiness if we don’t have the health to enjoy it.
This is why the old saying “Health is Wealth” is more relevant today than ever.
My advice is simple: make your health your first priority, not your last priority. Find a sport, hobby, outdoor activity, or fitness routine that you genuinely enjoy. Don’t exercise merely because you have to. Find something that makes you look forward to being active.
Because when exercise becomes a source of joy rather than an obligation, fitness can become a lifelong habit.
Take care of your health while you have it. Your future self will thank you for it.
