Never the same

List your top 5 grocery store items.

The list of grocery items is given by my better half. It is never the same. We don’t stock the grains like it is practiced in India.

Common households in India, stock the grains when the fresh crop arrives. During this time the prices are much lower and you get good quality items. I stopped this when I started preaching Lean Practices. The main principle behind Lean is, just in time supplies and no stocking policy. Then I followed this principle of keeping no stocks.

So the list is made as per requirement. Funniest part is the items are never listed when we see the shortage. They are memorised till we go for shopping. My style is to prepare the list and tick mark when you get the items. My wife will always rely on her memory and then make me run if something is forgotten.

It is the common scene about grocery items that some item is forgotten by wife and the blame is on me that I did not bring it. But I just smile and say we will buy in second round. Learnt to make peace 😊. She is against buying anything from the 10 minute stores like Blink-it, Insta mart or Big basket.

Her philosophy says, if you buy anything from these apps you end up buying more and unwanted items. That’s true.

Coming back to the grocery list, our list never contains packaged foods or ready to eat. Nor items like Maggi or any kind of Noodles nor Pizza base or bakery items.

The list included pulses, millets, jaggery and filter oil not refined. Fruits and vegetables are purchased on daily basis.

So this is the grocery shopping story of buying as needed.

  1. yep, I think that buying from apps makes us lazy…..we have to move around from time to time which is even more needed for an employee working all day sitting in a chair like me…..so I prefer shopping in places…

  2. A very relatable and beautifully written piece, Mukund Sir. The way you connect Lean principles with everyday grocery shopping is insightful and practical. The philosophy of buying as needed, avoiding overstocking, and staying away from instant-gratification apps truly resonates in today’s consumer-driven world. The light-hearted moments about the grocery list and shared understanding make the narrative even more engaging. Thank you for sharing such a simple yet meaningful life lesson. Stay happy and keep smiling 😊
