Embrace Minimalism: How Less is More in Life

What could you do less of?

This prompt reminded me of our Director India operations. This was his famous remark on our presentations – Less is More. Once we asked him to elaborate this and his powerful reply was

The core idea is that by stripping away superfluous elements, the essential components are allowed to shine, leading to greater effectiveness and impact. This principle is rooted in the belief that excess can lead to distraction, chaos, and a dilution of value.

With Less is More principle we can :

Focus on the Essentials: The philosophy encourages prioritizing what truly matters and removing anything that does not add value or serve a purpose.

Enhanced Clarity and Focus: With fewer distractions, it becomes easier to understand a message, appreciate a design, or focus on a task.

Quality over Quantity: The principle emphasizes investing in a few high-quality items or experiences rather than many mediocre ones.

Timeless Elegance: Simplicity often results in designs that are classic and enduring, rather than being susceptible to fleeting trends.

Post retirement, my To Do list was full and also the travel Bucket List was full. I had started regular exercise routine ( Cycling & Gym ), then I joined the music class for Tabla and started playing regular Table Tennis. Coupled with this there were scritpures like Dnyaneshwari and Dasboth, I planned to study. Bhagwad Geeta class was already joined. Then the consultancy assignments were on going. Though I was enjoying all these activities, it was too much to handle and made me busier than my pre-retirement days.

And then I remembered the saying Less is More. Focus on few topics and do more about them. I had to concentrate on Less Topic and Do more about them. I had reduced few topics and the life was easy & simple. I kept litle space for addition of new topics which were important. The planning became easy and the life was simpler.

Friends, apply this principle of Less is More even in your life and make it simple.

  1. Such a beautiful and practical reminder, Sir! I really loved how you shared your own experience after retirement. Focusing on fewer things and doing them well really does make life simpler and more enjoyable. Thank you for sharing this wisdom—it’s something we can all use in our daily lives.

  2. I loved this reminder because I live by the same thing now. Minimalism taught me that the moment I cut out the extra noise, the things that actually matter suddenly have room to breathe.

It’s funny how doing less ends up making life feel fuller. Your example hit home — sometimes we overload ourselves even with good things, and then wonder why we feel stretched. “Less is more” is honestly the only way I stay sane and grounded.
