Focus on the issue and not the person

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

This was the advice given by my boss Mr. Joshi. Being in leadership role, it was our daily affair that people used to approach us with complaints. Funnily these complaints used to come from grown up adults about their peers. I used to feel like acting as a school headmaster who resolves fight between children.

In one such incident, the operator came complaining about his co worker who harassed him and disturbed his work. I was trying to tell my boss about the person how he is.

That time he said, Mukund, please remember golden rule of conflict resolution, remove personalities and try to focus on the issue. You will get solutions faster. Never listen to only one side, always calm them together and then let them explain the situation.

First of all, if you remove personalities from the conflict, you focus on the exact issue and the resolution becomes easy. Secondly, if you listen to them separately, there will be outburst of emotion which does not help in understanding the issue. Best way is to call them together. When they are together, only truth comes out.

So whenever you encounter such issue, focus on the issues rather than the person.
