Trek Leaders – the Unsung Heroes of Adventure Travel

Daily writing prompt
What profession do you admire most and why?

Imagine you are on a Himalayan Trek. This time you are not with your friends and the fellow trekkers all strangers. This being your first Himalayan trek, you are nervous and worried. You have huge anxiety about the trek difficulty level and the weather changes. You have doubts whether you will be able to complete the trek or not.

This time the Trek Leader acts as a friend, guide and huge support. He is the strong support system for the trekkers. He ensures that your motivation level is high and you do not lower your morale till you reach the summit. He has to deal with variety of people, the ones like you but at the same time over confident people, who might slip into risky zones. There could be few seniors, whom he has to tackle differenlty and gently. While doing all this, he has to keep eye on the right path. He has to realy balance on a tight rope and keep everyone happy and under control.

Trek Leader has to undergo challenging situations during the treks. Sometimes the challenging weather or sometimes medical emergency. He is the boss of himself and independantly handle such situations. He needs to be strong and at the same time kind hearted person.

I always admire their patience and composed nature. They handle each one in the group with same smile and humbleness. They are the ones who navigate all the group smoothly to the destination. I always wonder about their skill of navigating. Finding the right trek route on a road which is completely surrounded by mountains and flat terrains, is most difficult. Even the directions like East-West cannot be jidged during such as trek. In such a situation, the trek leader is like a god who seamlessly directs the group to right direction.

I admire this profession the most. This profession can be compared to a teachers profession. Both of them work as a guide and torch bearer in our life. They navigate us to the desired destination.

Thank you for stopping by and reading my blog.

Stay Happy and keep smiling.

  1. In a lot of jobs, you have to deal with different people. I worked in several research teams. To motivate people of different ages, students as well as professors, to work productively together requires the same abilities. I suppose in every job you have to work with people in a team, you need quite some social wisdom.
We were several times trekking in the Himalayas with and without a guide. We saw that a guide is like a team leader in other jobs. Isn’t it social romanticism to see trekking guides as special?
