Wildlife Photography in Umred Karhandla Sanctuary

Curious Cub looking at the visitors

Beautiful forest with dense vegetation and wildlife around is my favourite pastime. If it is accompanied by cute Tiger cubs it will be a delight. Nagpur’s location makes it a convenient hub for accessing various tiger reserves in India, including Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Nagzira-Navegaon Tiger Reserve, Melghat Tiger Reserve, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary.

Last week we were in Nagpur and it was mandatory to visit one of the nearby National Park. I am passionate Wildlife Photographer and love to visit National Parks for mammal photography. I visited Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary for wildlife photography. It was amazing experience. Currently A Tigress with her 5 cubs was star attraction.

Umred-Pauni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in the State of Maharashtra in India. It is bounded roughly by Wainganga river and Gose Khurd Dam in Bhandara and Nagpur district. It is comparitively small forest spread over 189 Sq. Kms. ( 73 Sq mi )

Umred-Karhandala Wildlife Sanctuary is located at 45 Kms from Nagpur, Approximately one hour drive by car. Nagpur is well connected by Train and Air to all major cities of India.

The mammal species you find here include Bengal Tiger, Indian Leopard, Indian Gaur, Blue Bull, Chital, Sambar Deer, wild boar, sloth beer, monkeys and Dhole live here. There are more than 90 species of birds belonging to 22 families can be seen in the sanctuary. The Reserve is home to over 19 species of reptiles belonging to 9 families.

Umred – Pauni – Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary features a predominently dry deciduous forest, with Teak, Bamboo, Tendu, Mahua and other Indigenous tree species. supporting a diverse range of Flora and fauna.

Camera Settings : All the photographs are taken in AV ( Aparture Value mode ) using my Canon EOS 7D Mark II camera alongwith Tamron 150-600 mm G2 Lens. For better stability, Bean bag is used for camera base.

When we visited the sanctuary, the Tigress was sun bathing and the cubs were curious to see us. There are two Entry gates for this National Park. One is Gothangaon & other is Karhandala gate. We did two Safaris one each from each gate. However we could see Tigers during Gothangaon gate Safari and other mammals like Spotted Deer, Sambar, Indian Gaur, Wild boar during our Karhandla gate Safari.

Beautiful Landscapes in the sanctuary. See below pics.

There are many good resorts near Karhandla gate. We stayed in Karhandla Farm & Resort, Navegaon Deshmukh. This is App. 13.5 Km away ( 20-25 minutes drive ) from the Karhandla Gate and App. 30 kms ( 50 minutes drive ) from Gothangaon gate. The resort is good and you can find the details from Google.

We have also seen few bird species like Egret, Black Winged Stilt, variety of Ducks etc.

This was lifer ( First time seen ) bird for me which is seen in the picture below. I enjoyed clicking the photographs of this beatiful winged friend.
