A holiday is a day meant for joy and togetherness with family. It’s a time to bond, relax, and enjoy the company of loved ones. One of the highlights of a beautiful holiday morning is the seasonal delicacy prepared specially for family gatherings. At home, it often turns into a friendly competition of culinary skills among the women.
The day usually begins with tea and breakfast enjoyed together, accompanied by plenty of laughter and heartfelt conversations. Soon after, the ladies’ team gets busy in the kitchen, working on their secret menus to surprise everyone. Meanwhile, we sit around chatting or reading the newspaper, trying to guess what delicious dish is being prepared.
The aroma wafting from the kitchen soon gives us clues about what’s cooking. Holiday dishes are thoughtfully planned, usually considering the season. With the winter chill here, it’s the perfect time to relish a variety of fresh vegetables and hearty treats like edible gum laddus packed with dry fruits, or warm and comforting carrot halwa. Winter is also considered the best season for digestion, making it ideal for enjoying rich, wholesome foods prepared with desi ghee and nuts.
Holiday Dish for Winter season
This is the favorite season for foodies. If you visit vegetable market in this season, it is treat to the eyes. Variety of fresh vegetables are available in the market. This include fresh Tender Green Peas, variety of Leafy Vegetables Goose Berries, fresh lemons and green sarson leaves. The frequently prepared dishes for the winter season are
- Sarson ka Saag & Makkedi Roti
- Gond ke Laddu
- Carrot Halwa
- Green Peas Samosa
- Undhiyu ( Gujarati mix vegetables packed with Protein made from seasonal vegetables )
- Bajara Khichadi
- Sesame Laddu
It is an unending list of winter foods, I have only listed my favorite ones here. The top in the list is Sarson ka Saag & Makke ki Roti. Saron da saag, also known as sarsa da saag, is a dish of mustard greens cooked with spices. It originated in the Indian subcontinent and is popular throughout the region. Sarson ka Saag is a traditional Punjabi dish prepared with mustard greens, ginger, and garlic. It is traditionally served with makki ki roti. It is only available in winter season and my favorite due to the spicy & tangy taste.
Hurda Party in the Jowar farms
I enjoy this Hurda Party every season since my childhood. I love the Tender roasted Hurda coupled with the company of loved ones in the lap of Nature. The Hurda Party is an annual celebration that marks the winter harvest of jowar (sorghum). It’s a time-honoured custom deeply rooted in the rural fabric of Maharashtra. The term ‘hurda’ refers to the roasted, tender sorghum grains that are the centrepiece of this festival. Tender sorghum is naturally gluten-free and rich in dietary fibre, antioxidants, and minerals. During this season, the green Harbara ( Chana ) is also available. It is best when roasted. Traditionally the tender Sorghum or Hurda is enjoyed with Coconut+Garlic chutney and Jaggery. The gathering is unforgetable.

It is our annual gathering date for the family. Normally during Jan-Feb months when the green Jowar is available in the farms.
