3 Wishes to Change the World: Plastic, Education, Kindness

Daily writing prompt
You have three magic genie wishes, what are you asking for?

What a great prompt. I haven’t won any lucky draw yet, neither I have won any lottery ticket. But today, WP gave me three magic genie wishes. This is a golden chance for me to change the world litle bit.

Genie Wish 1 – The World Should be free of Plastic

Every day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans, rivers, and lakes.

Plastic Pollution is a global problem. Every year 19-23 million tonnes of Plastic waste leaks into aquatic ecosystems, polluting lakes, rivers and seas.

Plastic pollution can alter habitats and natural processes, reducing ecosystems’ ability to adapt to climate change, directly affecting millions of people’s livelihoods, food production capabilities and social well-being.

Since the 1950s, 9.2 billion tonnes of plastic have been produced , of which 7 billion tonnes have become waste, filling up landfills and polluting lakes, rivers, the soil and the ocean/ Plastic’s durability means it can take thousands or even tens of thousands of years to degrade.

We now produce and consume 430 million tonnes of plastic each year, two thirds of which are short-lived products which soon become waste.

Without urgent action that figure will rise three-fold by 2060, with devastating impacts for ecosystems and human health.
It is therefore time to eliminate unnecessary plastic, redesign products so they can be reused, repurposed, repaired and recycled, switch to non-plastic substitutes and strengthen systems for sound waste managemen.

My appeal to all readers : Say No to Plastic

Genie Wish 2 – Education to all

There are many people in the world who are not able to receive basic education (3 R’s) such as Reading, Writing and Arithmetic (Literacy) skills. Education is the pond of knowledge and it makes people superior to other forms of living things. Its aim is to give everyone a chance to learn and benefit from basic education – not as an accident of circumstance, or as a privilege.

In fact, education makes people educated, acquaints them with some need based skills. According to the Millennium Report, Education is a lifelong process and the ultimate aim of Education for All is sustainable development.

Essentially, education socializes children into society by instilling cultural values and norms, equipping them with the skills necessary to become productive members of society. In doing so, it stimulates economic growth and raises awareness of local and global problems.

Genie Wish 3 – More Kindness & Compassion

Acts of kindness can make the world a happier place for everyone. They can boost feelings of confidence, being in control, happiness and optimism. They may also encourage others to repeat the good deeds they’ve experienced themselves – contributing to a more positive community.

William Wordsworth (1770-1850) Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.

The Dalai Lama said Buddha’s teachings can be summarized in two sentences: You must help others. If not, you should not harm others. To be able to help others, according to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, one must cultivate compassion and kindness.

The Bhagavad-gita (12.13) states that compassion for all living beings is the first among the defining qualities of devotees. All living beings – humans, animals and plants – are precious members of the one divine family. Devotion for Krishna is complete only when it includes those whom he loves.

The question is How can I become more compassionate. I will give few tips for you to follow :

  1. Speak with kindness.
  2. Apologize when you’ve made a mistake.
  3. Listen carefully and without judgment.
  4. Be encouraging.
  5. Offer to help someone with a task.
  6. Be happy for someone else’s success.
  7. Accept people for who they are.
  8. Forgive people for making mistakes.
  9. Be Resepctful & patient with others.
  10. Express Gratitude & Appreciation.
