Shadu Maati Idols: A Step Towards Eco-Conscious Ganesh Festival

Ganesh festival is most popular and widely celebrated festivals in India. Particularly in the state of Maharashtra, this festival is celebrated for 1.5 days, 3 days, 5 days or 10 days. It differs from region to region.

In our house, traditionally we celebrate the Ganesh festival for 5 days. On 5th day the idol is immersed in water. Normally in a lake or river. Plaster of Paris ( POP ) was widely used for making this idols. The aesthetics and the features of the idol could be very well carved with POP soil. However this POP soil is not environment friendly.

Few years back the immersion day scene was worrying. All kinds of Ganesha Idols used to be seen floating on the waters of lake or sea or river. The Idol which was worshipped with so much devotion & faith, was left floating in pieces. It was devastating picture, the idol pieces used to be pushed by the high tides, to the sea shore. The reason being, POP does not desolve in the water.

However the scene has changed in recent years. People have started making these idols using special soil, which is easily disolvable in the water. Though few environmentally aware people have started this. And the city council or Government agency installs temporary idol collection centers and they arrange for the disposal.

In our house, I purchase the idol made from special soil which is called Shadu Maati and the immersion is done at home in the bucket. Once the complete idol is disolved into the water, it is used for gardening purpose.

This is my little support to save the environment. What about you? Share in the comments.
