Finding Peace through Acceptance

What brings you peace?

Yes, acceptance is often considered a key factor in achieving inner peace. Embracing this concept allows individuals to let go of resistance and judgment, fostering a sense of calm and contentment amidst life’s challenges. When we accept things as they are, rather than fighting against reality, we can reduce stress and cultivate inner peace.

I can share one experience from my corporate life. I shifted to my new office, which was nice cubicle and close to windows. But the issue was, in the morning hours the sun rays were coming in the cubicle and disturbing me from my daily routine. I used to get frustrated in the morning hours which in turn destroyed my whole day. I fought hard with facility team but could not resolve the issue. Finally I accepted the situation and changed my routine. I shifted my shop round to morning hours which was earlier planned at 11.00 am. I shifted the same to 9.00 am. This gave me immense peace in the morning hours and my day was well spent. The key was acceptance.

Acceptance applies to Situations as well as peoples. Accept the people as they are. Do not label them or judge them. Often we try hard to change someone because he does not fit into our frame. The efforts are certainly futile. Please don’t confuse acceptance with submission. I am not advocating to be submissive here.

Here’s why acceptance is so closely linked to inner peace:

  • Reduces Resistance:Acceptance means acknowledging and embracing situations, even when they are difficult or undesirable. This reduces internal conflict and resistance, which can be a major source of stress and unhappiness.
  • Promotes Self-Compassion:Accepting ourselves, including our imperfections and past mistakes, is an act of self-compassion. This can lead to greater self-acceptance and a more positive self-image.
  • Fosters Resilience:By accepting life’s ups and downs, we become more resilient in the face of adversity. We learn to adapt to changing circumstances and bounce back from setbacks more easily.
  • Encourages Letting Go:Acceptance involves letting go of the need to control everything. This can be incredibly liberating, as it allows us to release anxieties and worries about things outside of our control.
  • Connects us to the Present:When we accept the present moment, we are more fully engaged in our lives. This can lead to a greater sense of presence, mindfulness, and appreciation for the simple things.
  • Opens up Possibilities:Acceptance doesn’t mean giving up or resigning ourselves to a negative situation. Instead, it allows us to see things as they are, which can open up new possibilities for action and change according to Birchwood Clinic.

In essence, acceptance is a powerful tool for navigating life’s challenges with greater ease and finding a sense of inner peace amidst the inevitable ups and downs. We live in VUCA world. Vulnerability, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. To survive here we need to create clarity & become Agile. To bring all this the first step is acceptance.
