Listen to People

What do you listen to while you work?

This question could be well answered by the professionals working in software companies or working from home.

I was on the manufacturing shop most of the time. Either solving their issues or listening to them. There was no chance to listen to any kind of music. On few shop floors in some companies, they play soft music for the operator to listen to. But in our company this was not the case.

In fact people have to listen to the music which I played for them 🙃. I used to shout out for the low performance or quality issues arising out of negligence.

But being in a leadership position, I had to listen to people and guide them. Normally coaching people on different topics was major part of my job.

This is true for people from other functions. If you have to lead the teams from your own department or a cross functional team, you need to coach them and support them. In the process you have to listen to them as well. Sometimes they make sense or some time the talk is irrelevant but you have to listen to them. It is part of leadership routine.

Art of Listening

For any leadership role, knowing your team well, is a first step. Then understanding the team members strengths and weaknesses is second important step. For knowing and understanding your team, it is important to listen to them. Listening is an Art.

4. Listen to counsel them
5. Listen for nothing

Listening is very important even in relationships. When you listen to someone, you respect him/her or the opinion. By listening, you also respect the right of others to express themselves. Listening is also important for the person who listens because he gets insight into other people’s opinions and feelings.
