Photography – ODKF

This is very popular bird amongst Bird Photographers & Bird wathers. It is also referred to as Colour Bomb due to it’s colourful body.

We photographers, eagerly await the rainy season to spot & click this beautiful tiny bird. It is pocket size bird and found in tropical, moist & dense forest. They feed on Insects, Lizards, Frogs and worms.

Also known as Jewel of Indian Rainforest, it is resident of southwest forest. These tiny colour bombs breed in the western ghats of Maharashtra during monsoon. They are elusive & difficult to spot. They prefer dense forest and their nesting is close to running water stream.

It’s monsoon adventure to reach their nesting site. Normally the dense forest has frequent heavy spells of rains and the path to these sites is always muddy and difficult to walk through. We have to protect our Camera gear from rains and reach the site.

Once you reach the site, another challenge is low light. You have to click this bird in low light with low shutter speed. In such a situation, firm Tripod for the camera is must.

There are few places in Maharashtra, you can find the special hides created for the photography of this bird during monsson. These sites are namely Chiplun in Konkan region, Karnala Bird Sanctuary near Mumbai and Tamhini Forest near Pune.

Oriental Dwarf Kingfishers are also declared as the district bird of Raigad, and the best time to spot them is from the months of July to September. With their vibrant plumage and remarkable hunting skills, ODKF is one of the most beautiful Kingfishers in India.

Happy Clicking.
